With cats and dogs dominating the internet through various sources, contemporary art’s centre of attention has been animals. However, one of the oldest art forms (read books) have always displayed a love for animals and continue to do so. A pet parent’s life can be many things- wild, exciting, rewarding, tiresome but it is never boring. Now with movies and social media accounts of pets doing the rounds everywhere, we present to you a few of the great reads involving animals.
Black Beauty by Anna Sewell
In the recent wake of the brave horse Shaktimaan's death, here’s our tribute in the form of this first book recommendation, Black Beauty. Written from the point of view of the horse Black Beauty itself, this book very finely presents the 19th century idea of animal cruelty. Black Beauty is Sewell’s attempt to portray humanity through the eyes of an animal, as opposed to the stereotypical otherwise. A complete tear-jerker for an animal lover, it sensitizes the masses towards the issue of animal cruelty far before activists had considered it a worthy issue.
Marley and Me: Life and Love with the World’s Worst Dog by John Grogan
An acclaimed novel with an adapted movie, with the protagonist played by the illustrious Jennifer Aniston speaks volumes about the popularity of the novel. A very witty autobiographical novel by John Grogan narrates the experience of life with a Labrador Retriever named Marley. Though the ending is not a happy one, the novel is to be read as a humane attempt to love and cherish the furry awesomeness that are dogs. Marley is a dog like none other yet is as familiar as one would be with their own.
The Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot
The Princess Diaries is a coming of age novel for a preteen commoner turned Princess Mia Thermopolis and it is heartening to see a very witty journey through the journals of young Mia. What makes it even a better read is that this journey starts and reaches its culmination with Mia’s pet cat, Fat Louie. So much so, Mia’s InstantChat username also happens to be FatLouie. The cat’s antics and indolence reminds one of the famous lazy cat Garfield. It is a delight to read about how the cat’s constant habit of swallowing socks often puts Mia in trouble and how they manage to come out of it. The novel focuses on the importance of the companionship of an animal, even when parental and societal relationships turn haywire.
The Guest Cat by Takashi Hiraide
The Guest Cat is a heart-warming story of how a neighbour's cat brings joy into the otherwise dull life of a young couple living and working as freelance editors in Tokyo. The couple start looking forward to the cat's visits everyday and even pamper her with treats. The cat, whose name is Chibi, visits the couple daily and plays and naps in their home. The novel focuses on the beautiful relationship the cat develops with the couple and is a wonderful example of how it is our pets who actually adopt us, rather than the other way round. A must read for all cat lovers.
All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot
One of the most popular authors of books around animals, James Herroit just makes this list complete. After all, what could be more interesting than reading a vet’s experience with animals first hand? There are good and bad times involving pets. But, most of all, there are times which make it momentous. All creatures Great and Small has been adapted into a TV series and the loosely based narrative on the lives of animals through Herriot’s personal experience is a not only a delight to read, but the technicalities of animal rearing and caring are so wonderfully portrayed that one delves into a deeper understanding of the animal kingdom.
