Aromatherapy for Dogs: DIY Guide for Using Essential Oils

Ever sniffed a scent and got transported down memory lane to a past event or experience? Fragrances have been proven to connect us to past events and trigger memories and since our furry friends have a highly sensitive smelling sense, they tend to reap immense benefits through aromatherapy, if used correctly. Here are a few problems that can be effectively solved using essential oils:

  1. INSECT REPELLANT

Scared of fleas and ticks making a home in your baby’s precious fur? Try mixing 3-6 drops of Peppermint and/or Cedar wood oil with 240 ml of any carrier oil like Olive oil. Massage it gently onto the fur. Remember to apply only on the areas down the neck to the tail. Now you can relax and let your furry roll freely; in the grass obviously!

  1. SKIN ALLERGIES

While we love gushing about the pleasant weather, we also can’t stop cribbing about our skin and hair woes in winters. Our pooches share the same love-hate relationship with this season.

Try mixing Camphor powder with Coconut oil and apply using a brush. This super potion can take care of dryness, dandruff and itchiness, all at once.  You can now chill, literally!

  1. ANXIETY

Fancy taking your pooch for a long drive but worried about making him car-sick or do the firecrackers make your baby anxious? Try putting a few drops of Lavender and Jasmine oils in a diffuser and let your dog inhale and absorb the oils for 20-30 minutes twice a day to calm them down. Don’t forget to brew yourself a cuppa as well.

  1. BODY-ODOR

When it comes to bathing, winters really test our mental strengths. Time between baths for our fur babies can be increased by using this remedy to remove body-odor. Try mixing Coconut oil with water, add a drop of Sandalwood oil and give your furry a relaxing massage. While we can’t avoid taking a shower, our pooches finally have some advantages here.

  1. ARTHRITIS

No matter how hard we try to protect our babies, at times we do get helpless. Sometimes old age catches up, sometimes our pooches put on extra weight. Arthritis is a very common and painful problem but a good massage can relieve some of the pain. Try mixing 2-3 drops of Rosemary and Lavender oils with olive oil or vegetable oil.

PS: Be double sure to use only 100% pure essential oils and do consult your vet beforehand. One can never be too sure when it comes to our babies!
