Delhi has always been big on dogs, and until recently, cats and cat owners were somewhat marginalized in pet parenting circles. Well, not any more! Social media has made it possible for more and more cat communities to come up in the recent past, where members not only help in adoption and rehabilitation of strays but also help cat parents connect with each other. One of the most popular of such communities is Everything MEOW (EM). Started as a volunteer-based initiative in September, 2014, it has now over 3,000 members on Facebook and helps with hundreds of cat adoptions in Delhi NCR.
Like most good stories, the one about EM’s humble beginnings also starts with a cat. Says Ankita Yadav, founder of EM, “Everything MEOW (EM) came into existence when a malnourished and distressed kitten and her mother walked into my garden one morning... In the coming days, as I started feeding them in my garden, they declared it their home. And with that began my hunt for someone who could help me take better care of them. I turned to social media for solutions. While there existed a lot of online animal welfare forums, most were heavily bent towards dogs. That’s how EM was born. I educated myself on feline care and that teeny tiny kitten kept my motivation at an all-time high. That kitten is now the queen of my home, and I fondly call her Ghappi.”

The purpose of EM is to build a community of cat lovers in the capital, and to enable kitties to find forever homes through widespread awareness via social media. EM aims to “provide peer-group support to people about feline care to build a community that encourages people to translate their love for cats into real-time work,” says Ankita. “We help with rescues, adoptions, and in educating people about the necessary aspects of cat care.”
And the response has been quite extraordinary. EM has been growing in leaps and bounds over the past year. But, of course, there have been challenges on the way. “Adoptions have a cyclical phase,” says Ankita. “At times, it gets difficult to respond to everyone and at other times my team and I pray that some cats get adopted before we run into a meowtain of cats. The volunteer-based model is also a challenge because it involves dealing with multiple people in one go and everyone has a different kind of energy and wavelength.”

But Ankita and her team have no intentions of stopping. They plan to grow EM much more in the coming years and venture into more offline projects as well. We’ll wait and watch but for now, it seems that the cats of Delhi NCR are in safe hands!
