Researchers have recently discovered Margarita and much to your disappointment, we are not referring to the drink!
The sand cat, Felis Margarita, also known as the dune cat in the Baynouna region of Abu Dhabi, UAE, was captured in pictures by a group of scientists that decided to locate the endangered felines. These are the first sightings of the desert cat in 10 years since they are the smallest of all wild cats and being nocturnal in nature are difficult to find.
Shakeel Ahmed, an assistant scientist at Abu Dhabi's Environment Agency and several of his colleagues headed towards the mission of finding the elusive Arabian cat.Five baited camera traps were arranged and set up at the location by the team for several months in 2015 and finally, Ahmed and his crew managed to snap rare photos of the species. These sand cats are not studied well because it is hard to track them down due to their habitat.
What makes this an even more arduous job is the fact that these cats close their eyes when humans approach them in an attempt to blend in with their environment. These solitary felines were majorly spotted between midnight and 6 A.M., which helps us draw the inference that they sleep in their efficiently dug burrows during the day and come out at night to hunt.
Isn’t it good to hear about some positive news in the wildlife sector, when all we have heard off-late is about extinction? #SaveTheEarth
