Dogs in Politics Day

Ever wondered how dogs entered politics? No, it doesn't mean that dogs are running for president or something, how I wish though!

Let me tell you how it all began. It started on Sept 23, 1955 in USA with the famous mention of 'Checkers' in former US President Richard Nixon's speech. America is a dog loving nation and so it makes sense that their politicians would also love dogs. Something I wish to see in our country too. The exact numbers say that there have been 44 presidents in the US till now and 42 of them have had pets in the White House! How cool is that?

The 'checkers' speech was given when Nixon referred to his new dog while addressing the nation regarding his campaigns where the speech took a turn as Nixon began talking about his adorable dog that he and his family were clearly smitten with. Pat, Nixon's wife, had mentioned on the radio that her children would love to have a dog. And the day before they left for this campaign trip they got a message that they had a package for them. When they went down to see it, they couldn't believe their eyes. A man from Texas, had sent across a little Cocker Spaniel dog in a crate for the children! Black and white, spotted with a small wet nose and dreamy eyes. Nixon's daughter named him Checkers!

Ever since that day, 'Dogs in politics Day' has been celebrated on September 23rd every year. Isn't it wonderful seeing Rahul Gandhi loving his dog Piddi, Ajay Maken sharing a bond with his furry Sabrina, Manish Tiwari with his cocker spaniel Onyx and of course, Maneka Gandhi with Gudia!

Man's best friend, politician's best friend and our best friend. Imagine having the Rashtrapati bhawan filled with a couple of  lovely dogs and our President feeding them some treats. What a woofy sight that would be!
