Hero Dogs of India - Rocket: Pathankot Airbase 2016

The National Security Guard's K-9 unit's expert assault and sniffer dog, Rocket, played a vital role during the counter-terror operations at the Pathankot IAF airbase attack and suffered grievous injuries as a consequence.

Rocket, specializing in detecting the human presence, explosives, and IEDs, helped security forces in establishing the presence of one of the fidayeen attackers at the IAF base on January 4, 2016, when a massive fire had engulfed some buildings. The intensity and temperature were so much that the commandos couldn't enter the building. The NSG decided to use the services of Rocket for collecting intelligence from inside the building. He went inside and came after a while with a pouch in his mouth. This burnt pouch belonged to one of the terrorists, said an official. During the operation, Rocket received burnt injuries on his paws and forehead but was fully recovered later on.

Rocket was honored for his raw courage and dedication to duty in the face of extreme threat and danger.

According to the government, the NSG commandos and other forces managed to kill six terrorists who had entered the airbase on the intervening night of December 31 and January 1.
