Of Mowgli, The Jungle Book and Winning Hearts

Jungle Jungle baat chali hai pata chala hai…

Arre chaddi pehen ke phool khila hai, phool khila hai!

This track from the animated television series The Jungle Book, aired over 20 years ago, is ever so fresh in our minds. Jon Favreau with his latest adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book has brought back the wonderful memories from the 90s and struck a chord in the hearts of many.

Released in April 2016, The Jungle Book creates the perfect big-screen magic with 3D effects and brings to life the adventures of Mowgli, played by 10-year old Neel Sethi. The visuals are spectacular, to say the least, and the young artist and voice-overs by Ben Kingsley (Bagheera) and Bill Murray (Baloo) do justice to Rudyard’s characters.

From growing up with Akela’s pack of wolves and following Bagheera’s life lessons to understanding the true meaning of friendship with Baloo, Mowgli’s coming of age is an amalgamation of state-of-the-art technology and the subtleties of nature. All the animal characters look larger than life and weave into the jungle setting extremely well. That said, Disney’s decision to keep it short and sweet earns it an extra star and makes it appeal to adults and children alike.

It would only be fair to talk about the jungle setting in detail here. Whether it is the aggression in Shere Khan’s eyes, the innocence of the wolf cubs, Kaa’s shrewdness or Bagheera’s swiftness, the audience has many up close and personal encounters with the denizens of the forest.

If you haven’t yet entered the magical wonderland that Kipling and Favreau have created together, repeat these words after me and flip the pages of The Jungle Book…

NOW this is the law of the jungle, as old and as true as the sky,

And the wolf that shall keep it may prosper, but the wolf that shall break it must die.

As the creeper that girdles the tree trunk, the law runneth forward and back;

For the strength of the pack is the wolf, and the strength of the wolf is the pack.

Our verdict: 4/5
