Pomeranian - The Spitz-Type Toy Breed

The History of Pomeranian

The Pomeranian, also known as Pom, is a breed of the spitz-type sled dog. Classed as a toy dog breed because of its small size, the Pomeranian is descended from larger Spitz-type dogs, specifically the German Spitz from the Arctic. The breed is named for Pomerania, the area of northeastern Europe that is now part of Poland and western Germany. The Pomeranians were bred in those areas around hundred years ago.

Known as the Zwergspitz in some countries, the Pomeranian is the smallest of the spitz breeds. It gained popularity due to Queen Victoria, who became smitten with the breed while visiting Florence, Italy, and brought them to Britain with her.

The queen then became a breeder & exhibitor of Poms and displayed six of her dogs at the 1891 Crufts dog show. Windsor Marco, one of her dogs won first place in the breed. Victoria is credited for reducing the Pomeranian size from about 13 kilograms to their current toy stature. It was reported that as the queen lay dying in 1901, her favorite Pom, Turi, watched from the foot of her bed.

Pomeranians are typically friendly, playful, intelligent, and respond well to training.
