Security Agencies Taking Steps to Train and Enlist Indian Breeds in Dog Squads

The Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, in his Mann Ki Baat show, urged security agencies to include Indian dog breeds rather than foreign ones in their dog squad. Addressed in the direction of Atmanirbhar India Mission, most agencies are ready to induct Indian breeds like Mudhol hounds, Rajapalayam, and Rampur Hounds in their ranks.

Indian breeds, used by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaja in establishing Hindi Swaraj, found on the borders of Maharashtra and Karnataka, are being trained. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaja has been a role model for PM Modi, and he read about the dog squad of the warrior in history books.

PM Modi had suggested that these dogs can be used to meet new challenges in security, help in controlling the smuggling of narcotics, ensuring safety at the borders, fight terrorism, and much more.

Security agencies, including the Indian army, paramilitary forces like ITBP, SSB, and NSG, police forces of states like Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh, will be training these dogs for several months before deploying them on the field. It is expected that by the end of 2021, NTCD of BSF will have indigenous dogs ready for use after the three-stage training, and they will be deployed in 2022. Tekanpur has around 200 dogs, and they are undergoing different stages of training. These dogs have been trained to trace explosives and weapons and other security-related uses, like identifying terrorists in hiding.
