Supreme Court Legalizes the Right to Feed Stray Animals!

Pet news

We come bearing great news for all dog lovers out there! There are officially no restrictions on feeding street puppers. Yes, you heard it right.

The SC lifted a stay made last year (2021) on a Delhi High Court order recognizing stray dogs’ right to food along with citizens’ right to feed community doggos in their residential areas.

Although, while exercising this right, individuals need to be cautious and ensure that no menace or harassment is caused to other citizens of the locality, says HC. More specifically, individuals can utilize the private entrance or driveway of their homes or any other spot which isn’t mutually shared with other residential members.

Apart from that street dogs can be fed at areas designated by the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) in consultation with the RWAs of the municipal corporation. These designated spots must be finalised keeping in mind that “every community dog is a territorial being and therefore, community dogs must be fed and tended to at places within their territory,” said HC.
