The Abandonment Towards Pit Bulls in India: A Trend or Mismanagement?

Last week in Lucknow, an elderly female was mauled to death by her own Pit bull, leaving this breed in a bad light. This shocking incident has led pet parents, especially those with big breeds to either put their dogs up for adoption or straight up abandon them- some willingly, some under pressure by their neighbours.

For instance, in Gomti Nagar, Varanasi, a woman was forced to give away her Pugs for adoption as her neighbours protested against keeping them.

In the light of this incident, a ‘dog manual’ has been released by the Lucknow Municipal Corporation called Swan License Control and Regulation Bye-law 2003. Under this, those who are fond of keeping pet dogs will have to mandatorily secure a license after adhering to certain conditions.

What people fail to understand is that a dog’s behaviour is determined by their upbringing and environment, rather than the breed group they belong to! According to activists, people who are bringing home hunting breeds like Pitbull, don’t quite understand their needs and specifications.
