The breed Labrador was started in the late 17th century in the country ‘Newfoundland’. Being known as sporting dogs, they were also used as hunting dogs or gundogs. They were brought to the United Kingdom by fishermen in the 18th century. Till mid 18th century, they were known by different names like ‘Newfoundland dogs’ or ‘St. Johns Water Dogs’ but were officially named Labrador Retriever later that century.
Labradors often enjoy retrieving a ball endlessly (often obsessively) and other forms of activity like fetch and swimming. They love a game-driven activity.
They got the name ‘Labrador Retriever’ as they are good at retrieving things with the help of their great sense of smell. This is also why they make great sniffer dogs.
Labradors are fast learners, obedient, loyal, and are known to be good companions.
