Tips for Training Your New Rescue Dog

All dogs, irrespective of their age can be easily trained, but there are a few things to be kept in mind when bringing home a shelter dog. The key is to be patient and kind since they may have a traumatic past and find it difficult to adjust to new surroundings. Here are some tips that might help you:

Prioritize Their Comfort

Try to make your rescue baby as physically comfortable as possible. Provide them with a cosy atmosphere and a lot of toys to play with. You can dog-proof your apartment for their additional safety.

Start From the Scratch

Assume that your dog has no prior obedience training, and approach their training the same way you’d for a puppy. Do not expect too much at once and always use reward-based training methods for positive results.

Establish Boundaries

It can be challenging to enforce good behaviour if you aren’t firm in drawing boundaries initially. Therefore, don’t let them go away with unacceptable behaviour; as much as you want to coddle them and spoil them, control that urge!

Introduce Crate Training

Crate training or House training is a method wherein you confine your dog to avoid any mishappenings or mischievous behaviour when left unsupervised. This can also work as their safe place to retreat to when feeling overwhelmed with the new environment.

Get Professional Help

If required, take assistance from dog behaviourists and trainers to ease the process of your pooch’s training. The trainer will be able to give a better idea of what motivates them and can also introduce new methods of training specific to your dog.
