Vet Clinics at Your Service During Coronavirus Lockdown

The country is in lockdown due to Coronavirus Pandemic. Everyone is advised to stay at home to curb the spread of the virus. Although it is said by World Health Organisation that pets cannot get infected by or spread Coronavirus, but there are other health issues which our pets may face. It is also important to maintain social distancing and going out should be avoided.

So we’re here to tell you which all pet issues should be treated as emergency and should be taken care of immediately and which all issues can wait or can be cured at home.

Health issues in pets that qualify as emergency:

- Seizures

- Excessive Vomiting or diarrhoea

- Fractured bones, severe lameness or inability to move leg(s)

- Choking, difficulty breathing or nonstop coughing and gagging

- Bleeding from the nose, mouth, rectum, coughing up blood, or blood in urine

- Inability to urinate or pass faeces (stool), or obvious pain associated with urinating or passing stool

- Injuries to your pet's eye(s)

- You suspect or know your pet has eaten something poisonous (such as antifreeze, xylitol, chocolate, rodent poison, etc.)

- Refusal to drink for 24 hours or more

- Unconsciousness

- Heat stress or heatstroke

- Hard and swollen abdomen

- Injury in a traumatic accident or in an attack by another animal

- Any kind of bite (snake bite, insect bite etc.) or serious allergic reaction to the skin

- Unusual or persistent vocalization through whining or crying, which can be a sign of severe pain

- Persistent inactivity for more than 3 days (till 1 day is fine)

- Puppy vaccinations

Health issues that don't qualify as emergency and can wait:

- Routine check ups

- Routine adult vaccinations

- Change in behaviour or food habits of the dog (this could be due to various other external factors and don't have to necessarily mean that there's some issue with your dog - you can just observe them for 24-48 hours and take them to the vet only if they don't behave normally even after that)

- Itching & scratching or Hot Spots (these are normal skin issues, don't need to take them to the vet unless it becomes really miserable)

- Scratching of ears (could be normal unless they're scratching it abnormal for more than a day or two, go to your vet)

- One time vomiting or diarrhoea (The cause can also be as simple as a dietary indiscretion rather than something serious. Stay in for 24 hours and observe and only rush to the vet if it becomes severe)

- Dental diseases or bad breath

- Obesity

- Arthritis

- Hair loss

- Excessive Fleas & Ticks

- Loss of appetite for 24 hours

- Persistent inactivity for 24 hours

- Limping with weight bearing (which means that the animal is using the full paw otherwise while climbing but sometimes limping)

- Elective surgical procedures like spaying, neutering, dental scaling etc.
